President of the European Council Donald Tusk congratulates Sergio Mattarella on his election as President of Italy

On behalf of the European Union I wish to congratulate Sergio Mattarella, on his election as President of the Italian Republic.
Italy has chosen a much respected and experienced politician as head of state. His conviction and sense of justice will help Italy to continue playing a leading role in Europe. I wish President Mattarella every success in his new function.
Let me also express my deep appreciation to outgoing President Napolitano for his contribution to Italian political stability.
