Parliament backs four out of five nominees to the European Court of Auditors
Parliament approved nominations to the European Court of Auditors from Slovenia, Latvia, Czech Republic and Slovakia, but rejected that from Poland, in plenary votes on Wednesday, on the basis of Budgetary Control Committee recommendations. The Maltese nominee, Anthony Abela, had previously withdrawn his candidature in response to the committee’s negative opinion. The final decision on appointments to the Luxembourg body will be taken by the EU Council of Ministers.
The member states nominated the following candidates (with voting outcomes):
Approved by the plenary
Slovenia: Mr (404 votes to 222, with 70 abstentions)
Latvia: Mr Mihalis Kozlovs (386 votes to 123, with 186 abstentions)
Czech Republic: Mr Jan Gregor (382 votes to 256, with 57 abstentions)
Slovakia: Mr Ladislav Balko (328 votes to 317, with 52 abstentions)
Rejected by the plenary
Poland: Mr Janusz Wojciechowski (288 votes to 358, with 48 abstentions)
Withdrawn
Malta: Mr Anthony Abela
Before the plenary vote, the six nominees were heard in the Budgetary Control Committee on 15 March, which recommended rejecting the candidates from Slovakia, Poland and Malta. The Maltese candidate subsequently withdrew.
Members of the are appointed for six years. The Council, after consulting the European Parliament, decides upon the proposals made by each member state.
