High Representative Federica Mogherini travelled yesterday to Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar for the 11th Asia-Europe meeting (ASEM). The meeting started in a day of grief and mourning for the deadly attack in Nice. "We stay united against hatred and violence, in Europe as in Asia and elsewhere", Mogherini said. Informed of the attack in France a few hours before the beginning of the summit, ASEM Leaders issued a Statement on International terrorism condemning the unacceptable loss of innocent lives.

As well as Mogherini, Council President Donald Tusk i and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker i, the meeting brings together on 15 and 16 July leaders and senior figures from 50 European and Asian countries. This year is the 20th anniversary of ASEM, which was created in 1996 as a forum for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Asia.

Leaders are reviewing progress made and setting the course for cooperation in the next decade. They are expected to highlight the need for connectivity in all its aspects. The summit will also reinforce the pillars of the partnership: peace and stability, economic prosperity, sustainable development and a better quality of life.

The partners are discussing the state of play in the world economy, and are expected to focus on strengthening policies to achieve inclusive economic growth and on inter-regional trade and investment flows. They will also discuss digital and transport connectivity.

The summit provides an opportunity to exchange views on the ways to address current and future challenges to international stability, sustainable development, terrorism, climate change and migration.
