The Danish delegation took the floor, however, to voice its concern regarding the proposal to make mutual recognition compulsory within the same zone. This delegation wondered, in particular, whether this solution might not stand in the way of the measures its country had adopted to protect its groundwater. The Commission representative gave the assurance that Member States would retain all their options for defending the quality of water within their territory. (k) Risk Assessment of GMOs, in particular GM maize MO 863 - Requested by the Austrian delegation 10430/07 ENV 317 GRILEG 78 The Austrian delegation considered that the scientific evaluation on which the authorisation of maize MON 863 was based did not take sufficient account of the long term risks of that product. It therefore requested that a study of the long-term effects of the product be carried out as soon as possible, on the basis, in particular, of the most recent scientific knowledge. Pending the findings of that study, it considered that the Commission should take measures to suspend or limit the use of such maize. Twelve delegations supported the Austrian delegation's request.
